RIA’s - You may not have heard of this term, it stands  for ‘Rich Internet Applications’.

Most current software is developed as an ‘Internet’ application or a ‘Desktop’ application, now that we are connected to the Internet more than we are not these two methods can now merge!

With the work of Adobe Systems® Flex™ and AIR™ runtimes, Suns® Java™ Runtime and Microsoft® Silverlight™ we have the tools to develop rich web applications and desktop applications that are more ‘connected’ than ever before.

We probably all take data out of the office, we’ve used laptops, PDA’s, etc.. But synchronising data when we get back to the office is fraught with dangers and it’s a hassle! Imagine using a laptop on the train, you get a connection to the office network and you refresh your prospects data. You start updating some of your files, you have a slip of paper with that new prospect and you add it to your CRM.

You didn’t realise but as you passed under that tunnel you lost your connection with the office. This doesn’t matter because we can now operate in a connected or disconnected way! We have a remote database and a local database storing everything we do. The system automatically reconnects to the remote database whenever possible and adds our new records and refreshes our changes, we just carry-on working!

Another way we gain an improved experience with RIA’s is that the tools we use on our web and desktop applications are all the same. We can communicate and create documents seamlessly.
